Description

The international seminar “Practicing, Teaching and Gender Equity” is part of the CRAFT Open Forum “Feminine and Feminist Architecture. This Space/Place is [Not] for You”, which addresses gender equality within the field of architecture. The initiative aims to provide operational tools, critical insights, and in-depth analysis regarding equity, inclusion, and the social responsibility of architecture. The program is divided into two thematic sessions. The first, “Gender Equity in Architectural Education and Professional Culture”, examines the institutional, educational, and professional dimensions of the discipline, with references to diversity and inclusion practices and policies, such as Politecnico di Milano “Gender Equality Plan”, the status of women in the architectural profession, and the contribution of RIBA, specifically through the “Build It Together” report produced with the Fawcett Society. The second session, “Unveiled Histories in Architectural Pedagogies and Practices”, explores women's contributions to architecture in relation to teaching, professional practice, and the reappraisal of their contributions to the discipline, as well as experiences developed within the Milanese and national contexts. The program includes an introduction by Cassandra Cozza; a first session in English with contributions from Mara Tanelli, Sumita Singha, Emily Jeffers, and Elke Krasny; and a second session in Italian with contributions from Ilaria Valente, Claudia Mattogno, Francesca Claudia Scotti, Claudia Bruno, and Carolina Pacchi. The event serves as an opportunity for professional development and exchange between universities, professional bodies, scholars, and practitioners on the themes of gender equality and inclusion in contemporary architectural culture.

Educational project

The seminar aims to provide tools for professional development and in-depth analysis of gender equality in architecture, with specific reference to education, professional practice, design culture, and the academic context. The initiative is designed to foster greater awareness of equity, inclusion, and social responsibility, also in relation to institutional policies, academic and professional dynamics, and the ethical and deontological profiles of professional practice. Within this perspective, the seminar aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, specifically addressing Goal 5 – Gender Equality, Goal 10 – Reduced Inequalities, and Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Requirements

The event is open to all members of the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects, and Conservators. It is particularly relevant to professionals and educators interested in gender equity in the architectural profession, equity in architectural education, and tools to promote more inclusive work and learning environments. No specific entry requirements are needed.
