Fondazione FAIR - Future Artificial Intelligence Research

The Future of AI Research in Italy

Mission

Promoting cutting-edge research on Artificial Intelligence

The main purpose of Fondazione FAIR — Future Artificial Intelligence Research — is to implement artificial intelligence projects funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and any subsequent funding. Fondazione FAIR aims to advance cutting-edge research on artificial intelligence, encouraging the development of robust, reliable and transparent AI aware of social and environmental impacts. It also aims to strengthen Italy’s scientific critical mass, retain and attract talent in the sector and support the creation of innovative technologies and solutions in the public and private sectors. All this is in line with the objectives of the Italian Strategic Programme for Artificial Intelligence.

The Politecnico di Milano coordinates Spoke 4 on ‘Adaptive AI’, which is dedicated to developing adaptive artificial intelligence systems. Spoke 4 addresses the scientific and technological challenges related to the adaptability of smart systems, with a particular focus on the ability of artificial systems to interact with the environment, perceive the changing context and act promptly and effectively.

Adaptability is a key component for creating AI systems that can operate not only in virtual environments but also in complex and dynamic physical contexts. Although machine learning is now the predominant enabling technology, important scientific questions remain, relating to the theoretical guarantees of adaptive systems and their integration with other artificial intelligence paradigms.

The main research challenges of Spoke 4 include:

  • The theoretical foundations of learning for adaptability;
  • Non-convex optimisation in machine learning and deep learning models;
  • The study of environmental characteristics that better guarantee the adaptability of smart systems.

The ultimate goal is to design smart systems that work and interact with humans, operating in complex and constantly evolving settings and adapting to new situations with an awareness of the limitations, while integrating the principles of safety, trust, sustainability and inclusion from the design phase.
