The collaboration between Baker Hughes and the Politecnico di Milano serves as a bridge of excellence between research and industry, fostering innovation aimed at safer, more accessible, and sustainable energy. This partnership represents a collaborative journey that brings together exceptional talent and cutting-edge technology, propelling the energy sector forward through knowledge sharing and the joint development of advanced solutions.

Since 2019, Politecnico di Milano and Baker Hughes have been engaged in a strategic partnership with significant impact on the energy industry. In 2025, this partnership was renewed for another five years, confirming a shared vision focused on innovation.  Baker Hughes is an energy technology company that provides solutions to energy and industrial customers worldwide. Through its innovative technologies and services, Baker Hughes is driving progress in the energy sector by making energy safer, cleaner, and more efficient for both people and the planet.

The collaboration between six departments of the Politecnico and Baker Hughes’ engineering and production teams has involved, since 2019, more than 90 people including professors and researchers from both organizations. Their joint commitment has led to advanced technological results and solutions in engineering fields related to turbomachinery, innovative thermodynamic cycles, materials for energy applications, and rotor dynamics. Their research also addresses strategic fields for the energy transition and decarbonization, including optimizing production processes with a focus on sustainability, supporting advanced techniques like additive manufacturing, and developing technologies for CO₂ capture. Additional studies have focused on hydrogen production and the implementation of energy management and control systems based on artificial intelligence.

The partnership is further reinforced by their collaborative involvement in five European projects that have secured funding, as well as their joint support for doctoral scholarships and research initiatives. Together, these efforts have driven technological progress and innovation at Baker Hughes, while also establishing Politecnico di Milano as a premier academic center for energy research.

Looking ahead, the 2025–2030 partnership will expand to cover new strategic areas, including hydrogen, artificial intelligence, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and advanced manufacturing. The goal is to create scalable and sustainable solutions for more efficient, low-emission industries, while also encouraging talent development and entrepreneurial innovation, particularly through the involvement of PoliHub, the university’s Innovation Park and Startup Accelerator.
