During the PhD

Study plan

Management and updating of the study plan during the PhD

At the beginning of the program, you will be asked to complete a study plan (via an online application in Online Services) listing the courses you intend to take. To be effective, the study plan must be approved by the Doctoral Program Coordinator, following the internal procedures established by each Doctoral Program.

You can prepare your study plan after the start of the academic year and modify it and add courses incrementally throughout your studies.

If you wish to remove courses, you can request their deletion via the online application. Your deletion request must then be approved by your coordinator (usually through the local Doctoral Program office in your department).

When you add a course to your study plan, you also receive certain services, such as course-related emails and access to study materials on the BeeP platform (accessible via your Online Services homepage). If you are formally enrolled in the program and pass the course exam, a formal evaluation is recorded on your study plan.

If you are interested in additional external activities (courses, workshops, seminars, etc.), you must obtain approval from your PhD Program Coordinator.
It is strongly recommended that you complete all required courses within the first two years so that you can dedicate yourself to research in your final year.

Study program

Doctoral studies are primarily research-based. At least two years should be dedicated to research and writing the thesis. Attendance at courses is also mandatory (the number of courses varies from program to program; details are provided in the Study Plan for your PhD).

The Doctoral School defines the general rules for doctoral studies at the Polytechnic University of Milan. These rules have been refined by each Doctoral Program in a detailed Study Plan. You can find the study plan for your PhD on the Doctoral Programs general description page by selecting your Program from the list.

There you can find:

  • the detailed study plan (a PDF document describing the objectives and general organization of your program);
  • the educational project

Please read the detailed study plan as it provides important information on how your doctoral program is organized. Specifically, you can find:

  • The list of courses scheduled for the current academic year, with the names of the instructors
  • The list of courses

For each course listed, you will find a detailed syllabus, with information on when the course will begin. Courses begin year-round.

The courses can be taken from your own Doctoral Program, from the School's list of Doctoral Programs, and from other Doctoral Programs.

How to submit the study plan

Doctoral students enrolled in PhD programs can complete their study plans by following the steps below:

Log in to Online Services using your personal ID and password.

Once logged in, select "Complete your study plan."

To recover your credentials if you have lost them, click "Help and Information" -> "Help with Personal ID and Password."

The study plan must be approved by the Doctoral Program Coordinator, following the internal procedures established by each Doctoral Program.

The study plan can be prepared after the start of the academic year (November) and can be modified and courses added incrementally during the course of studies.

The deletion of courses from the plan must be requested through the online application, and the deletion request must be approved by the Coordinator.

Adding a course to your study plan also activates certain services, such as emails about the course and access to study materials on the BeeP platform (accessible through Online Services).

After adding a course to your study plan and subsequent approval by the Coordinator, you can take the exam and register your grade, which will be visible in your study plan.

If the Coordinator fails to approve your study plan, any registered grades will remain suspended until your study plan is approved.

Attending additional external activities (courses, workshops, seminars, etc.) requires the approval of the Doctoral Program Coordinator.

It is strongly recommended that you complete all mandatory courses within the first two years so you can dedicate yourself to research in your final year.
