Doctoral level courses

Participation in single courses for external candidates

The Doctoral School offers a wide range of programs in all fields of Architecture, Engineering, and Industrial Design.

Beginning in 2019, Politecnico di Milano decided to open its doctoral program to all interested external candidates. The individual Doctoral Programs provide training and research curricula specific to the various fields of application. To complement the individual Program curricula, the Doctoral School itself offers a series of training activities aimed at strengthening doctoral students' curricula with a series of transversal and transferable skills.

The training contribution

Participation in these initiatives adds value to doctoral careers. They develop candidates' creativity and the ability to communicate in qualified international academic, scientific, and professional environments. Doctoral students are trained in problem solving, as well as conflict and failure management. They become accustomed to acquiring information from diverse sources and synthesizing relevant knowledge, developing leadership skills, and balancing teamwork in managing and developing research according to appropriate ethical principles. Emphasis is placed on the cultural aspects of scientific thought and the attitude toward research and innovation.

The courses offered are selected annually with the aim of contributing to the development of a distinctive, unifying, and transversal polytechnic culture across the various Doctoral Programs. Courses are assigned according to the following procedures:

Single courses registration

External candidates wishing to enroll in a single course must register with Polimi Online Services and search for the "Doctorate Single Course Application" function.

By selecting this function, candidates can choose the courses they are interested in (up to a maximum of 10 credits per academic year) and upload their CV and a cover letter.

The application will then enter the evaluation phase. If the evaluation is positive (which also depends on the availability of places in the chosen courses), candidates will be able to register and take the courses. At the end, they can also request certification of the credits earned.

The registration fee is €500.00 / 5 credits. For certain categories of candidates, including doctoral students from universities with which POLIMI has signed exchange agreements and employees of companies with which POLIMI has signed a "Joint Research Platform" agreement, this fee is waived (the stamp duty and insurance costs will still be payable: the total fee is €27.04, payable online upon acceptance).
