Description
The First-Level University Master's Program in Artificial Intelligence for Architecture [AI.AR] at Politecnico di Milano is the first Italian university programme entirely dedicated to generative artificial intelligence applied to architecture, architectural representation and project documentation management. The programme is aimed at professionals and graduates who wish to integrate generative AI tools into their workflow, starting from the theoretical foundations and progressing to operational mastery of the most advanced technologies available. The curriculum covers the generation of architectural images and videos, generative three- dimensional modelling, digital restoration and enhancement of historical photographic heritage, through to the development of intelligent assistants for consulting regulations and technical documentation. The Master's programme consists of 60 ECTS credits delivered over twelve months, with a timetable designed for working professionals: weekday classes complemented by one Saturday morning session per month, alternating between theoretical sessions and applied laboratories based on real-world briefs. The programme concludes with an intensive integrated project workshop and an individual final dissertation. It is available both in person at the Politecnico di Milano campus and in synchronous online mode, with identical academic qualification and teaching quality.
Educational project
The Master's programme offers a training path that progresses from the fundamentals of generative artificial intelligence through to the development of advanced competencies applied to architectural, representational and documentary workflows, with the aim of training a new professional figure: the AI-augmented digital designer. Upon completion, graduates will be able to: understand the theoretical and operational foundations of generative AI, progressively acquiring mastery of the most advanced tools available on the professional market; autonomously use the main generative AI tools for image, video and 3D model production in architectural contexts, actively supporting the design phases — from concept development through project management and communication — with generative outputs integrated into the professional workflow; design hybrid human- machine workflows for ideation, communication and project presentation; enhance the efficiency and quality of the design process by integrating AI tools across the concept, development, review and presentation phases, reducing iteration time and broadening the space of creative exploration; apply advanced upscaling, digital restoration and colourisation techniques to historical photographic and documentary heritage; extract metadata and spatial information from photographic archives using Vision Language Models; configure and maintain LLM systems with RAG for intelligent consultation of building regulations and technical standards; critically assess the quality, reliability, biases and ethical and legal implications of AI-generated content. The programme also develops cross-cutting competencies in prompt engineering, critical thinking about AI, and professional responsibility in the use of generative tools.
Requirements
The Master's Programme is open to applicants holding a Bachelor's Degree or a Specialist/Master's Degree. Academic qualifications obtained abroad will be considered valid provided they are equivalent within their respective higher education systems. Admission selection will be conducted by the Scientific Committee.
