Description

The Master’s program aims to educate highly qualified professionals in the field of lighting design, with integrated competencies spanning design culture, visual perception, lighting technology, color culture, and the study of surfaces. Particular attention is devoted to color as both a design and cultural device, explored in its theoretical, perceptual, and applied dimensions, as well as in its dynamic interaction with natural and artificial light. The program combines a theoretical-critical dimension, laboratory experimentation, and applied design practice, fostering a conscious approach to light as an immaterial material capable of structuring space, shaping identity, and enhancing environmental quality. Within this framework, the relationship between light and color is examined as a field of research and design, aimed at defining coherent visual scenarios, perceptual qualities, and expressive languages characteristic of contemporary design culture. The first part of classes will take place online whereas the second part will be in person.

Educational project

The Master’s program aims to develop: - Advanced knowledge of the physical, perceptual, and cultural foundations of light, with a specific focus on color theories and their evolution within design culture, on the phenomena of interaction between light and matter, on the mechanisms of chromatic perception, and on the sensory and symbolic interpretative models of illuminated space. - Design competencies in the integration of light, color, and surfaces, through the study of the relationships between color temperature, color rendering, material reflectance, finishes, and tactile qualities, in order to construct coherent spatial configurations grounded in the interaction between illumination and chromatic composition, according to a conscious approach to contemporary design culture. - Skills in measuring and verifying lighting performance, including the analysis of photometric and colorimetric parameters, through simulation methodologies and control procedures oriented toward perceptual quality, visual well-being, and consistency with design objectives. - Critical autonomy in the development of complex lighting concepts, understood as design processes capable of integrating light and color into a structured project vision, able to generate identity, visual hierarchies, spatial rhythm, and emotional effects, in dialogue with design culture and contemporary languages. - The ability to operate within the contexts of architecture, interior design, public space, and artistic installation, integrating expertise in chromatic scenarios, the conscious use of natural and artificial light, and strategies of light modulation in relation to materials, volumes, and diverse environmental conditions, within a broad and interdisciplinary perspective characteristic of design culture.
