MSc in Health Informatics

The Master of Science in Health Informatics is an interuniversity Master’s Degree Program born thanks to the collaboration between Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele and Politecnico di Milano—two centers of excellence that combine medical and computer science expertise to train the leaders of the digital transformation of healthcare.

This two-year program, taught in English, is designed for those who wish to acquire advanced IT skills applied to the medical field and become highly competitive professionals in a rapidly growing job market.

The program offers an innovative, integrated, and multidisciplinary learning experience, where theory and practice come together and cross-fertilization between different disciplines becomes a real added value. The goal is to prepare professionals who can confidently operate in complex, dynamic, and interdisciplinary environments.

From the very first semester, the study plan adapts to students’ diverse academic backgrounds through a personalized pathway, enabling each student to enhance his/her educational profile and become a unique and valuable asset in the job market. Among the main strengths of the program is the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in internationally recognized technological research centers, such as the AI HUB and the NEUROTECH HUB of Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele—two on-campus research centers of excellence that offer students a unique and immersive educational experience.The program encourages and promotes direct contact with the industrial sector. Numerous agreements with major national and multinational companies have already been established and made available to students. Through these collaborations, students have the opportunity to choose the study path and thesis project that best align with their aspirations and interests.

Thesis and internship activities may therefore be carried out in purely academic settings, in hybrid academic–industrial environments, in private companies and industries, or in public institutions with different functions.

Admission is subject to the evaluation of academic requirements. Candidates deemed eligible must also undergo a selection process divided into two parts:

A test to assess basic knowledge of computer science, mathematics, biology, genetics, anatomy, and physiology;

An evaluation of the applicant’s academic record achieved during the Bachelor’s degree program and of their adequate preparation to undertake the specific subjects of the Master’s degree program.

For enrollment, applicants must hold an English language certificate at level B2 or higher.

The study plan is customized during the first semester of the first year through two alternative courses: “Software Systems Design and Operations” and “Biology, Genetics, Anatomy and Physiology.” These are designed for students coming from different educational backgrounds, in order to provide an integration of knowledge that enables them to effectively tackle the remainder of the program.

In the common track, advanced subjects are addressed, including statistics, classification and data processing, epidemiology, etiological mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and the analysis and design of clinical studies.

Alongside this, students develop algorithms in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Artificial Neural Networks, with particular attention to clinical applications, human–machine computer interfaces, and the acquisition, analysis, and processing of biomedical images.

Students also learn how to define and extract omics biomarkers and explore the opportunities offered in terms of data, analysis, and the creation of dynamic databases through the use of wearable devices.
