BSc in Chemical Engineering
The chemical engineer is the professional who designs and optimizes processes that transform matter and energy, enabling the production of materials, pharmaceuticals, energy carriers and sustainable fuels, food products, and technologies essential to everyday life. This figure plays a key role in decarbonization, the energy transition, and the development of the circular economy, as the chemical industry lies at the heart of the production system and connects resources, energy, and manufacturing. Studying Chemical Engineering means learning how to design safe, sustainable, and efficient plants and processes capable of reducing emissions, valorizing waste and by-products, and developing new solutions for clean energy. It means contributing concretely to the major environmental, economic, and industrial challenges of our time, acquiring strong and versatile skills applicable across many strategic sectors.
The Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano provides a solid foundation in core disciplines – mathematics, physics, and chemistry – integrated with specialized subjects such as applied thermodynamics, transport phenomena, chemical reactors, industrial plants, materials science, and process control. Students learn to describe and model transformations of matter and energy, design equipment and plants, and assess safety, environmental impact, and energy efficiency. Significant emphasis is placed on laboratory activities, numerical exercises, and group projects to develop problem-solving abilities and teamwork skills. The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering allows students to deepen their knowledge in areas such as energy and hydrogen technologies, environmental sustainability processes, circular economy, advanced materials, industrial biotechnology, and plant digitalization, with study tracks offered also in English and opportunities for international experiences.
The Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering provides direct access to the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, where students can further specialize in advanced topics related to energy, environment, materials, and innovative processes. Graduates find employment in chemical, energy, pharmaceutical, food, and manufacturing industries, as well as in engineering and consulting firms, research institutions, and technology startups. They may work in plant design and management, development of new products and processes, energy optimization, industrial safety, and environmental sustainability. The acquired skills also provide access to second-level master’s programs and PhD pathways in Italy and abroad, opening opportunities for technical and managerial careers in highly innovative and international contexts, with positions of responsibility in the energy transition and the sustainable transformation of the production system.
