BSc in Building Engineering/Architecture

The Single-Cycle Master’s Degree Programme in Building Engineering-Architecture offers a multidisciplinary education that enables students to manage design projects in both their architectural and engineering dimensions.
The Building Engineer–Architect is a professional capable of designing and managing architectural works as the person responsible for the entire construction process, integrating architectural, technological, structural, and environmental aspects. This professional develops advanced skills both in the adoption of the most innovative construction technologies for new buildings and in interventions on existing structures, with particular attention to the sustainable regeneration of the built environment. Added to this is the ability to address the relationship between settlements and their context within landscape and environmental assessment.
At the end of the study programme, after passing the State Examinations, graduates may register with both the professional register of engineers and that of architects. Furthermore, in accordance with Directive 85/384/EEC, the awarded degree allows access to the profession of designer in other European Union countries without the need to apply for recognition of the qualification at a foreign university.
The Degree Programme in Building Engineering–Architecture is a five-year course with a wide range of subjects, including 12 design laboratories. The programme is based on solid foundations in scientific, technical, and design disciplines and trains professionals capable of effectively managing the complexity of architectural projects and their implementation, fully aligned with today’s emerging demands for environmental quality, energy control, and sustainability.
Graduates in Building Engineering–Architecture are able to address design in all its complexity, ensuring:

  • Architectural design skills at both building and urban scales;
  • Scientific and technical expertise to tackle issues of environmental and energy sustainability, in both new construction and the rehabilitation of existing heritage;
  • Use of innovative, state-of-the-art technologies;
  • Control and modelling of physical and technical phenomena to reduce energy demand and employ renewable energy sources;
  • Management of the entire construction and administrative process of new buildings.

The success of the Building Engineering–Architecture programme at Politecnico di Milano is demonstrated by the high employment rates of its graduates, measured one and five years after graduation, and by the satisfaction expressed by employers. These results emerge from the annual surveys conducted by the Career Service and from feedback collected during events organised by the service itself.

The professional profile of graduates in Building Engineering–Architecture is designed to respond appropriately to the growing complexity of issues related to architectural design and to the new responsibilities required by the professional world.
This profile is characterised by an interdisciplinary education based on up-to-date scientific and design knowledge, enabling graduates to tackle complex problems and to identify appropriate technical solutions, in line with the innovative dynamics of the various sectors and applicable at different scales: from the city to the landscape, from the built environment to the building and its components.
Graduates are professionals with expertise in the design, execution, and quality control of construction projects, both new and rehabilitation works, combining a comprehensive critical and intellectual vision with solid scientific and technological skills. In addition to practising as independent professionals, graduates in Building Engineering–Architecture may carry out high-level consultancy activities and assume positions of significant responsibility in the fields of construction and the transformation of cities and territories, as well as in roles requiring advanced expertise in technological innovation for low–environmental-impact buildings.
The awarded degree is required in order to access the State Examinations, which qualify graduates for professional practice. The qualification awarded by Politecnico di Milano allows graduates to sit both the State Examination for the “Senior Engineer” licence and the State Examination for the “Senior Architect” licence. Most graduates choose to sit only one of the two examinations and, consequently, to register with a single professional body; however, it is also possible to take both examinations and register with both professional registers.
Career opportunities include:

  • Architecture and engineering firms;
  • Engineering consultancy companies;
  • Construction and maintenance companies for buildings and infrastructure;
  • Industries producing components and systems for the construction sector;
  • Technical offices of public administrations, both as contracting authorities and as supervisory bodies;
  • Technical departments of private clients;
  • Insurance companies;
  • Independent professional practice in architectural and/or engineering design.
