The Universidade NOVA de Lisboa was founded on 11 August 1973 and is the youngest of the three Lisbon state universities. Integrated in a framework of expansion and diversification of higher education, the University has adopted a new model within the Portuguese system that has highlighted interdisciplinary approaches, technological developments and, at the same time, safeguarding offers in traditional academic sectors such as medicine, sciences and humanities. The founding of NOVA was a response to an ever-increasing demand for higher education in Portugal, in general, and in the city of Lisbon in particular. Since its establishment, NOVA has aimed to innovate higher education in Portugal and to contribute to the social and economic development of the country. As a public institution of higher education, its mission is to serve society at local, regional and global level, through the progress and dissemination of knowledge and the encounter between cultures, societies and people, through teaching and research excellence and a service provision based on a strong sense of community. The Universidade NOVA de Lisboa stands out in the main international rankings, these results recognize the efforts developed as an institution with excellence in competitive research and teaching. For example, it obtained the highest score of A (Very good) in 10 indicators of the global U-Multirank 2019, and is therefore ranked 17th among European public universities, it is also in 13th place among young European public universities in the 2020 QS ranking regarding the employment of young graduates.
