Tongji University is one of the leading universities in China located in Shanghai, the most international city in the country. It was founded in 1907 when Erich Paulun, a German doctor in Shanghai, inaugurated the German Medical School. After being renamed Tongji German Medical School the following year, in 1923, it was formally established as a university. The name Tongji, phonetic approximation of the German word deutsche (which means German), suggests the idea of cooperation "in crossing a river", an idea that is taken in the University logo. In 1927, it became National Tongji University, one of China's seven oldest national universities. Around 1949, Tongji already had five colleges of natural sciences, engineering, medical sciences, liberal arts and law, and enjoyed an excellent reputation as a complete university at national and international level. After a national university reorganization campaign in 1952, Tongji became an engineering university famous in civil engineering and architecture. In 1978, it started its transformation process in an international university by creating new connections with Germany and it has become a multidisciplinary engineering university instead of one mainly focused on civil engineering. In 2006, a cooperation agreement was signed between Chinese and Italian government with creation of the POLITONG programme, a collaboration between Politecnico di Milano and Tongji University, which includes double degree programmes of first level and LM programmes in the fields of design, engineering and architecture. In 2007, the hundredth anniversary of Tongji foundation sets the goal of becoming a global, international, research-oriented university with different characteristics and global influence. In 2013, the university proposed its point of view of "a world-class university oriented towards sustainability". The university now covers 10 wide categories of academic fields, including design, engineering, science, medicine, management, economics, philosophy, literature, law, education and art.
