Period abroad

Doctoral students may undertake training periods or internships at public and private companies and organizations, other universities, research institutes, centers, and laboratories, both Italian and foreign. Training periods abroad are especially encouraged.

For doctoral students receiving scholarships up to the 37th cycle (with scholarships provided by the Polytechnic University of Milan), the scholarship amount is increased by no less than 50% for any period spent abroad.

This increase cannot be paid for more than 18 months, if authorized.

For doctoral students receiving scholarships from the 38th cycle (with scholarships provided by the Polytechnic University of Milan), the scholarship amount is increased by 50% for a total period not exceeding 12 months, if the doctoral students are authorized by the Teaching Board to conduct research abroad.

This period may be extended up to a maximum of 18 months for doctoral programs co-supervised with foreign institutions or under agreements or consortia.

All requests for study abroad, and any scholarship increases, must be submitted exclusively online, at least 15 days before departure, by accessing the Doctoral Career application from your personal page. These requests become final only after approval by the Coordinator.

After completing the application procedure, the doctoral student must complete the request for study periods abroad by accessing the "missions" application, entering the same dates.

PAYMENTS:

Regarding all the requests for stays abroad with an increase of the scholarship approved by the coordinator (or their delegate), the increases will be disbursed in the same month as the stay occurs. However, if the request is submitted before or during the month when the stay begins, in order to ensure the payment within the same month, the increase must be approved by the 3rd day of that month.
This deadline also ensures the application of any changes that may impact the monthly increase. All deadlines may substantially change coming up to university closures (e.g., August and Christmas festivities); in this case, additional information will follow this paragraph.

ATTENTION!!: Increments for periods abroad in December 2025 (or earlier periods not approved within the timeframes described on this page) will be included in the December payroll only if approved by November 28. This also applies to modifications of previously approved periods.
