Period abroad

Doctoral students may undertake training periods or internships at public and private companies and organizations, other universities, research institutes, centers, and laboratories, both Italian and foreign. Training periods abroad are especially encouraged.

For doctoral students receiving scholarships up to the 37th cycle (with scholarships provided by the Polytechnic University of Milan), the scholarship amount is increased by no less than 50% for any period spent abroad.

This increase cannot be paid for more than 18 months, if authorized.

For doctoral students receiving scholarships from the 38th cycle (with scholarships provided by the Polytechnic University of Milan), the scholarship amount is increased by 50% for a total period not exceeding 12 months, if the doctoral students are authorized by the Teaching Board to conduct research abroad.

This period may be extended up to a maximum of 18 months for doctoral programs co-supervised with foreign institutions or under agreements or consortia.

All requests for study abroad, and any scholarship increases, must be submitted exclusively online, at least 15 days before departure, by accessing the Doctoral Career application from your personal page. These requests become final only after approval by the Coordinator.

After completing the application procedure, the doctoral student must complete the request for study periods abroad by accessing the "missions" application, entering the same dates.

PAYMENTS:
For study abroad requests with a scholarship increase approved by the coordinator (or his/her delegate), the increases will be paid in the same month as the study abroad.

However, if the request is submitted before or during the month in which the study abroad begins, to ensure payment is made in the same month, the increases must be approved by the 3rd of the month.

The timeframes provided are subject to change, even significant ones, during periods of University closure (e.g., August and Christmas holidays), which may be noted below.

PLEASE NOTE!! For increases related to periods abroad in August 2025 (or previous periods not approved within the timeframes indicated on this page), inclusion in the August pay slip is guaranteed only if approved by July 27th. Meeting this deadline also guarantees the application of any changes that impact the monthly increase.
