Descrizione dell'iniziativa
The course provides a high-level overview of the evolution of mobile communications and networks, examining their impact on the information society. It is designed for students with a technical background as well as those interested in the business implications and the interplay with other technologies and domains, including cloud computing, distributed applications, the Internet of Things and satellite networks.
The course is taught by Marco Zangani, Director of Network Strategy and Architecture at Vodafone Networks, who brings extensive experience in the development of mobile networks across Europe.
The course will include 4 modules.
Module 1 NTN (Non Terrestrial Networks) and Open RANThe module is focused on new architectures of 4G/5G mobile networks, transcending the traditional Single RAN paradigm. NTN satellite networks (Direct to Mobile) provide total coverage to regular smartphones, by combining the mobile communications with rapidly maturing space technology. Open RAN has changed the traditional radio equipment architecture, by opening interfaces and fostering the adoption of COTS servers for the baseband/digital unit, thus exploiting all the benefits of larger scale and broader opportunities for innovation.
Module 2 Mobile Private Networks (MPN) for industrial applicationsMobile Private Networks have become a powerful driver for the development of 5G solutions and applications. They leverage innovation in radio and core equipment to guarantee optimal E2E network solutions for enterprise use cases. They combine with 5G Advanced features and network slicing to provide fully tailored configurations to implement industrial applications both on dedicated coverage and wider geographical span.
Module 3 Core Network Cloudification and APIsCore network evolution is based on development of Network Functions on Containers (CNF), allowing Mobile Network Operators to benefit from scalability and automation in engineering and operation. The new core networks are also exposing APIs for the fruition of certified real time information and data by third parties applications, generating value for all the involved parties in the value chain, down to the customers. A dedicated architecture for API exposure has been developed in order to ensure the proper level of performance, security and reliability are achieved.
Module 4 IoT architectures and solutionsIoT over Mobile Networks is a fast growing markets. IoT applications leverage on a wealth of network architectures and features, ranging from GPRS to NB-IoT and RedCap as part of 5G Advanced.3GPP standardization has been very active in fostering the specification of new solutions to adapt the main standards (4G, 5G, 5G A) to the various needs of Machine to Machine connectivity, allowing to exploit the pervasive coverage of mobile networks for all the possible IoT use cases and applications. The latest trend is to use mobile networks for passive sensing of objects, thus opening a new stream of innovation.
