The University of Oviedo is a public institution of higher education and research based in Oviedo, and the only university in the region of Asturias. The institution dates back to the 16th century and today offers a full range of undergraduate degrees in all fields of knowledge, as well as postgraduate degree programmes in collaboration with national and international universities and more than 250 companies. Teaching takes place on seven campuses spread over the central region of Asturias, in the centres of Oviedo, Gijón and Mieres. The University of Oviedo has a firm international orientation, as well as close ties to the region and a strong commitment to the transfer of knowledge to the business world. It was among the first universities in Spain to receive accreditation as a Campus of International Excellence. Research is well developed: the university carries out 80% of the research, development and innovation activities in Asturias.
