The Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Offenbach am Main is a university of art and design in the German state of Hesse. Its tradition dates back to the year 1832, when it was founded as a school for craftsmen. Shortly afterwards it became a school of arts and crafts, a place where both practical arts and theoretical subjects were taught at the same time. In 1970 the school was transformed into a higher education institution with university status. The degree course offers a choice between different courses: design, art, communication design, media arts, set design and product design which include theoretical lessons, artistic and scientific research with particular attention to electronic media and the latest technologies. The school puts its focus on creative thinking and stands out for its highly open approach, experimentation, questions and research are becoming increasingly important in line with an increasingly interdisciplinary world of dynamic information and knowledge. Design in this sense deals with design and research in all areas of society, culture and science, business, nature, technology and industry. Today studying design means more than ever being interested in countless fields of knowledge, being curious, exploring what is feasible and questioning, the faculty meets this challenge by offering a place where students can get involved, experiment and acquire communication tools necessary for an interdisciplinary dialogue and a future working career.
