Founded in 2006 by the Hanseatic free city of Hamburg, following the merger of three different city institutions operating in the built environment and design, the HCU is the only European university today totally oriented to architecture and urban development. It focuses on the new challenges that 21st century cities will have to face, constantly looking for new interdisciplinary approaches to solve their problems. Located in Hamburg, a very dynamic and rapidly growing city that hosts an important commercial port and big publishing agencies and financial companies, HCU has recently moved to its new headquarters in the heart of HafenCity, an area involved in an ambitious urban development project that will transform a former harbour area, within 2025, into a new integrated district in the city centre. The district has been completely redesigned and, on 60 hectares of building land, houses will be built for at least 10,000 people, with new 40,000 jobs. The HCU, as a public institution and centre of culture and design, will act as a lever for one of HafenCity's greatest challenges: to change an area that for 120 years has been a harbour into a dynamic and functional neighbourhood in the very centre of the city. Its building will be the point of reference and the laboratory for the development and critical evaluation of the progress of this project.
