Description of the initiative

The activity consists of a 4-day international workshop in which approximately 80 Design students from many EU countries are invited to participate, with guests from outside the EU.The activity is promoted by an international Design school network that has voluntarily collaborated for more than 10 years. The network is called GIDE (Group for International Design Education), a unique network of 8 higher education art and design institutions that have evolved from a previous intercultural network founded in the 1990s. GIDE enriches the intercultural experiences of students, educators and institutions by providing opportunities for collaboration, benchmarking and knowledge exchange. Every year, a partner school organizes and hosts a workshop, proposing a common working theme, together with an exhibition of the different schools' work carried out during the year. They are currently part of the network:
-Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art – University of Dundee, Dundee
- Faculty of Contemporary Art, Belgrade
- Thomas More University of Applied Science, Mechelen
- University of Madeira, Madeira
- Universidad Politecnica de Valencia ETSA – School of Architecture, Valencia
- Politecnico di Milano – School of Design, Milan
- Faculty of Design, Ljubljana
- SUPSI, Mendrisio

In 2024, the workshop will be organized by the University of Madeira, particularly by the Department of Art and Design. The workshop will be hosted in the city of Funchal, the capital of the Portuguese island, and will be held at the CENTRO CULTURAL E DE INVESTIGAÇÃO DO FUNCHAL (FUNCHAL CULTURAL AND RESEARCH CENTER).The title and theme of the workshop are: "BEYOND TOURISM, a concept that surpasses the typical tourist experience, seeking authentic and meaningful interactions with local cultures, environments and communities, emphasizing responsible and sustainable hospitality and tourism practices, respecting the local environment and promoting positive impacts on communities. The students will carry out the design activity divided into international groups and guided by some teachers in different locations made available in the city, rotating moments of collegial lectures with moments of work in small groups, including co-design for and with local communities.
