Description of the initiative

Minimization of single-use plastic is more and more urgent and asks for alternative solutions in everyday life. Huge quantity of plastic is used for bottled water, especially in Italy which is at second place in the world for bottled water use.ASAP! project aims at engaging students within Politecnico di Milano in a co-design process of new sustainable solutions for collecting and use drinking water into the campus: for example, a new public water fountain as a landmark for the university and the city, a better experience in the food and beverage areas, an innovative communication campaign. During this workshop, students will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of ideas and intervention with a positive impact on environment, and also to learn about collaborative approaches od multidisciplinary design. The workshop is based on 4 meetings face-to-face and team homework (with revision sessions by the research group). At the end, participants will present ideas and design concepts to experts for collecting feedbacks on feasibility.  Activities:
  1. "Data & Inspiration": integration of data emerging from ASAP! research for generating inspiration on strategic themes (water, drinking, single-use plastic, health, drinking water experience.
    • Homework: collecting projects from all fields (art, architecture, fashion, landscape¿) in connection to the inspiration emerged in the first meeting.
  2. "From inspirations to proposals": exposition to all participants of projects collected; creating teams and working on design concepts that can answer to problems elicited from ASAP! ethnographic research and scientific data on water quality. Best ideas will be discussed collaboratively.
    • Homework: working of design concepts according to problems and technical requisites.
  3. "From proposals to development": discussion of design concepts with experts and university staff
    • Homework: finalization of design concepts (graphics and text)
  4. "From development to communication": presentation of design concepts with special focus on drinking water experience, and final reflection on education benefits of the workshop.
This workshop contributes to the SDGs, in particular SDG6 and SDG12.  ASAP! project is funded by Fondazione Cariplo within Plastic Challenge, and aims at improving the experience of collecting and drinking water in Politecnico di Milano, for reducing single use plastic. Project team includes Politecnico Departments DICA, DAStU, SSA, together with cooperativa sociale Eliante.
