NEXT generation methods, concepts and solutions for the design of robust and sustainable running GEAR (NEXTGEAR)

Stefano Bruni
Despite playing a central role in the railway sector, running gear is subjected to limited changes. It is suggested that innovations have a double impact by increasing the first cost of the running gear while reducing maintenance costs and, consequently, reducing life cycle cost (LCC). However, it remains difficult to measure the long-term savings. The EU-funded NEXTGEAR project will develop a universal cost model that makes it easy to estimate the economic impact of a proposed innovation and if and how first and maintenance costs can be influenced. It will propose ideas based on new materials and production methods that reduce bogie weight. The project will also study the construction of new cost-efficient railway wheelsets.
