The general goal of the project NICHOID is to control the function of stem cells when proliferating in vitro. Our aim is to fabricate miniaturized containers, so-called nichoids, to cultivate these cells in vitro. The nichoids are fabricated by polymerizing a resin using a pulsed laser beam. This fabrication technique allows to control their architecture down to the nanometer scale. The project is thus a frontier research in the field of nano-fabrication for biology, and gathers a team with knowledge in engineering, physics and biology. The stem cells cultivated in the nichoids will be employed as a drug to cure pathologies such as heart infarcts, spinal cord injury, inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and Crohn’s desease, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.
