Description

The first conference of “Talks from Africa” series will be dedicated to the international South African firm Jo Noero Architects (Cape Town, Port Elisabeth) and the presentation of the book on his work (S. Bartocci, M. Faiferri, Noero Architects Building and Drawing, LIStLab, 2021) with the authors Samanta Bartocci (UNISS) and Massimo Faiferri (UNICA). Noero Architects has been working in his country for forty years on projects sensitive to the needs of the context and local communities, developing his own way of designing. The practice has received both local and international awards, including the Lubetkin Prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2006, the Ralph Erskine Prize from the Nordic Association of Architects in 1993, and the Icon Award for Building of the Year from Icon Magazine in London in 2013. The work of Noero Architects has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, the Venice Biennale in 2008, 2010, and 2012, the Singapore Biennale in 2008, the Sao Paolo Biennale in 2009, the Chicago Architecture Biennale in 2015, the Museum of Architecture in Munich in 2014, and the National Gallery of Art in Cape Town in 2009. Their work has been extensively published and is included in the Phaidon Atlas of 20th Century World Architecture. The work is part of the permanent architecture collection of the Chicago Art Institute.

Educational project

“Talks from Africa” is a series of three conferences, taking place between April and November 2024, held by nationally and/or internationally prominent architecture firms working in South Africa. The initiative stems from the need, and desire, to showcase projects that have approached the particular South African context with a critical approach, placing architecture and the relationship with the city, people, and places at the centre. The aim is to introduce the work of these firms, which are relatively unknown in Europe, and to establish a connection that links the experiences presented to the current debate on established and emerging practices and methodologies in Sub-Saharan African architecture. The initiative was born from the need and desire to raise awareness of projects that have been able to deal with the particular South African context with a critical approach, putting architecture and the relationship with the city, people and places at the centre. The aim is to raise awareness of the activities of these studios, little known in Europe, and to trace a thread that links the experiences presented to the current debate on consolidated and emerging practices and methods in the architecture of Sub-Saharan Africa.
