Description of the initiative

The aim of this course is to develop a basic understanding of quantum mechanics and quantum information processing concepts which will serve as a basis to answer some fundamental questions regarding transmission and processing of information in quantum channels and systems. This course will give a chance to be initiated to a very exciting cutting-edge research field, which will find application and will influence diverse research fields. The course will introduce to an advanced research field. In the initial part, the basic concepts of quantum mechanics will be introduced, and then later deepen more advanced concepts such as communication protocols, error correction techniques, quantum key distribution and algorithms for searching and factoring integers. Focus will be on the following aspects: 1. Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (Quantum Bits, Reversible Operations, Measurements and Composite Quantum Systems, Entanglement, Quantum State Preparation, Outer Product, and Density Operator) 2. Three Quantum Protocols (Entanglement Distribution, Super-Dense Coding, and Teleportation) 3. Shor's and Grover's Algorithms (Basics of Computational Complexity Theory, Query Complexity, The Quantum Fourier Transform, Integer Factorization) 4. Quantum Error Correction (Classical vs Quantum Error Correction, Quantum Error Types, Stabilizer Measurements, The 3-qubit Error Correction Code: Encoding and Syndrome Extraction, Stabilizer Codes, Shor Code) 5. Quantum Key Distribution (Cryptographically Secure Communication, Public vs Private Key, BB84 QKD Protocol, Eavesdropper Detection).
