Description of the initiative

MAD is an 'ultralight' architecture design atelier, which questions through architectural studies and projects research in architecture and vice versa, establishing an operational dialogue between students, researchers, teachers, professionals. A meeting place of architectural thoughts, design proposals, critical reflections, based on the art of 'making architecture', crossing between the university and the world of work, where it is possible to experience free but real dialogues with reality and its transformations. The objectives of MAD are the acquisition of critical and design skills hinged on the themes of architectural design and history for heritage, in an inter-scalar and interdisciplinary sense, coordinated and oriented by the composition of space and form.  MAD 1 involves the collaboration between students, faculty of the Mantua Pole and Andrew Berman Architects, on the conception, design and realization of the exhibition on the work of the architect Andrew Berman, planned for the 2024 edition of Mantovarchitettura, hosted at the Casa del Mantegna in Mantua. MAD requires the use of the various means and tools of the field of architecture toward the goal of design and history, involving expert figures in architectural and urban composition, art and architectural history, conservation and restoration, building structures and techniques, urban and regional planning, surveying and digital modeling, and musealization. MAD 1 involves the use of the tools of architectural history and criticism, architectural and museographic design, economic project management, production of architectural objects, and finally the fundamentals of graphic design. Activities are scheduled to take place between February and mid-May with a weekly cadence and an intensive period for the conclusion of the project. The criteria for passing the activity, coordinated and supervised by the proposing teachers, consist of the recognition of the critical skills developed with regard to the content of the project research and the actual achievement of the concrete results of the delivered project, collectively shared.
