Description of the initiative
The "Lego Factory" initiative aims at exploiting the learning-by-playing principles to give students the possibility of understanding the most common issues in the design and management of production systems. The student will be provided a miniaturized production/assembly line made by intelligent modules LEGO EV3 MINDSTORMS with which they will be asked to do projects aiming at the improvement of the system performances through the introduction of new stations and the development of technical solutions.
Students are invited to work during workshops during which they will propose solutions and new ideas. In particular, the following topics will be proposed: 1) Traceability. Development of a sensors network for tracing parts along the system. The objective is to be able to trace the position of each single part in each stage of the line. (2) Machine to machine communication. Development of a distributed control system made of LEGO EV3 modules able to communicate with each other and with a central controller through a local network (Python Socket Programming). (3) Load/unload station. Realization of a load/unload station for the parts from the fixtures and its related management logic. (4) Quality. Construction of a Quality control station with its parts re-routing system. (5) Building blocks. Study of the modularity and re-configurability of the material handling system.
The work will be divided in groups. The evaluation will be based on the goals reached and on the creativity of the solutions proposed by each group.
