Excellence of Politecnico in QS World University Rankings by Subject

7th in the world for Design and Architecture and 23rd for Engineering. An all-time record in Italy

In an increasingly competitive global academic environment, Politecnico di Milano has once again established itself as one of the leading academic institutions worldwide, ranking among the top universities in its core subjects: 7th place for both Design and Architecture and 23rd place for Engineering, according to data published today by the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024.

QS World University Rankings by Subject ranks the best universities in the world by subject area, and today covers 55 subjects divided into 5 macro areas. The Rankings by Subject help students choose universities based on their subjects of interest.

The results released today, with a significant presence in the world rankings in multiple fields of study, consolidate the university's reputation as a leader in scientific and technological education and research.

What emerges from the latest QS survey is the value of engineering subjects, which in today's increasingly complex and multidisciplinary scenario must be defined using the plural. In this specific field, we are among the top 25 universities for Data Science & AI, facing close competition.

said Professor Donatella Sciuto, Rector of Politecnico di Milano.

Equally important is the confirmation of the university's undisputed excellence in Architecture and Design.

Examining the rankings in greater detail, the Politecnico di Milano has achieved outstanding results in various subject areas, with prominent positions in key sectors of economic and scientific development, such as Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Manufacturing Engineering, ranking 9th in the world in these subjects, which are critical for the technological development and innovation that guide industrial progress.

In the field of Civil Engineering, the university ranks 12th in the world. Despite increasing demand from the job market, the number of graduates, not only from the Politecnico, in this field is decreasing. This shortage represents an extraordinary employment opportunity for those who choose to pursue a path that places professionals at the forefront of Italy's infrastructural development, with employment rates for Politecnico graduates reaching 97% within one year of graduation.

Furthermore, the university has been ranked 23rd in the crucial field of Data Science & AI, an indicator evaluated by QS for the first time, further confirming the efforts of researchers and professors. Precisely in this area, for those who choose to be at the forefront of the digital transition, with the opportunity to contribute to the development of new techniques, applications, and ethical implications, the Politecnico di Milano offers over 50 years' experience in the study of artificial intelligence. Indeed, our university has established itself as a major centre for AI research, with a transversal and pervasive approach covering all areas of research and innovation.

Compared to last year, the Politecnico di Milano has made significant progress in various subject areas, including Physics and Astronomy (+22 places), Architecture and Built Environment (+3), Mathematics (+3), and Chemical Engineering (+7), thus demonstrating a continued commitment to academic excellence and pioneering research.

All 12 departments of the university are also in the TOP50 for at least one subject.

At the national level, Politecnico di Milano reaffirms its position as the primary benchmark in Architecture, Design and Engineering.
