Multi-actor support for Covid-19 mitigation strategies in rural and peri-urban areas in developing countries

AVSI Foundation, Doctors with Africa Cuamm, VIS Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo, together with with Eni and Politecnico di Milano, have started a collaboration to promote the creation of devices and the organization of information campaigns in rural and peri-urban contexts of developing countries, in order to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Such collaboration is developed along three main lines of support: rapid emergency response; slowing down the spread; and promoting resilience.

As a technical partner, Politecnico di Milano provides technical notes and multilingual video tutorials to promote the implementation of sanitizing devices and solutions in local laboratories in rural and peri-urban contexts in developing countries.

SURGICAL MASKS AND PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

SURGICAL MASKS

In response to the COVID-19 emergency, the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology conducted hundreds of tests on fabrics, analyzing their suitability for PPE manufacturing and their effectiveness in terms of filtration and breathability. The indications on materials and packaging techniques are shared in the following document.

GOWNS, CAPS, OVERSHOES AND DISPOSABLE BOOTS

Disposable gowns, caps and overshoes are protective clothing against infectious agents and are classified as PPE. The use of suitable materials prevents contamination in healthcare. The Department of Aerospace Science and Technology shared technical notes following the analysis performed.

FACE SHIELDS

Face shields are PPE used to protect the facial area and its mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth). On the basis of the tests carried out, the Department Mechanical Engineering has developed indications regarding the most promising materials and production methods.

DISINFECTANT SOLUTION

Since March 2020 the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "Giulio Natta" is engaged in the production of the sanitizing solution "Polichina" according to the recipe of the World Health Organization.

The Department has made available a multilingual video that illustrates how to install a plant for the production of this solution.

The tutorial is currently available in Italian, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, Greek, Farsi and Arabic at the following link

To accompany the video, technical notes on how to set up a small continuous plant for the production of sanitizing solution are available:
