It is compulsory to prove your Italian language proficiency if you are a foreign student admitted to:
- a Laurea Magistrale programme delivered in English
- the Laurea Triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) programme in Architectural Design– EN
- the Laurea Triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) programme in Civil Engineering - EN
You must demonstrate your proficiency in Italian before sitting your final degree exam and finishing your study programme.
Exemptions from proof of italian language proficiency
Italian language proficiency does not have to be proved if:
- you are an Italian citizen;
- you have a high school diploma or equivalent in Italian;
- you have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Italian;
- you attended a ‘scuola pontificia’ Catholic school in Italian;
- you are resident in the Canton of Ticino (official language Italian).
How to lift the additional educational obligation (OFA) in italian
To lift the OFA in Italian, you must provide one of the B1 certificates recognised by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research, MUR, (on the basis of the circular ‘Foreign students’ on the quality system CLIQ - Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità) to be submitted to the Registrar’s Office via Contacts for students
Italian language courses
If you do not have any of the certificates recognised by the MUR, you can take a free Italian course (the course level is decided by a preliminary proficiency test) organised by the Politecnico di Milano.
The course includes the following steps:
- register for the course and take the preliminary proficiency test
- attend at least 75% of the assigned course
- register for and take the final test, which you will pass if you maintain or improve on your starting level (minimum A1)
By passing the final test, you lift the additional educational obligation in Italian.
Participants with less than 75% attendance or who fail the final test may either retake the course (repeating the preliminary proficiency test) or take one of the B1 language courses recognised by the MUR independently.

The final test will only be passed if the result achieved is equal to or higher than the level obtained in the preliminary test; this will lift the additional educational obligation in Italian. Please note that no certificate will be issued.
