Time Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC) is based on the detection of singles photons and their arrival times with respect to a reference signal. In order that the precision is high, high repetition of the same process is necessary and, typically, the result is the histogram of the arrival times of photons which represents the shape of the optical signal. This technique, however, is affected by the presence of a dead time due to the fact that the detector can receive at most one photon (otherwise pile-up effect) for each laser impulse emitted: the currently adopted technique that solves the problem though compromises the speed of the measurement system.
The invention consists in a system that solves this problem achieving the same result (histogram), but in less time and without the pile-up effect.
