Health Insurance

For Visiting Professors Coming from EU Countries

If you have decided to pay taxes in Italy, you can subscribe freely to the National health Service.

Instead, if you have decided to pay taxes in your Country, you have two possibilities:

  • use your EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card), that will cover expenses in case of emergency hospitalization and it allows to refer to a doctor or to a specialist indicated by the ASL (Azienda Sanitaria Locale) offices in Milano for a medical visit (in this case, the medical visit may have a cost)
  • take out a private insurance

For Visiting Professors coming from Extra-EU Countries

If you already have a private insurance for illness valid for Italy, you have nothing more to do. Otherwise you can choose between the following two possibilities:

  • subscribe to the National Health Service at ASL Offices (see below): the subscription is free only if you have chosen to pay taxes in Italy
  • take out a private insurance (Politecnico di Milano will take charge of this insurance only in case of Scientific Research contracts)

Subscription to the National Health Service

Subscription is to be done at ASL Offices in Milano. You can go by yourself or delegate the Contact person for Visiting Professor in your Department. The required documents are: passport, tax code, proxy statement, work contract with Politecnico. If you subscribe freely, you must bring your monthly payslip (in order to demonstrate that you pay taxes in Italy). If you do not have the right to subscribe freely, before going to an ASL Office, you must go to a Post Office to pay the tax for subscribtion: remember to bring the receipt you got for the payment.

If you are carrying out Scientific Research at Politecnico (and you hold a Host Agreement): you can subscribe only after having obtained at least the receipt of the permit of stay application. For this reason, we suggest you to buy an insurance for emergency hospitalization for the first period of stay in Italy, while waiting for the subscription to the National Health Service.
