Politecnico is curator of the Italy Stand at the Triennale

Politecnico di Milano is the curator of the “4Elements/Taking Care” Italy Stand at the XXII Milan Triennial (Triennale di Milano)

4ELEMENTS / TAKING CARE is the title of the Italy Stand, overseen by Politecnico di Milano at the XXII International Exhibition of the Milan Triennial (Triennale di Milano) (1 March – 1 September 2019). As part of the Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival theme, chosen by the curator of the exhibition, Paola Antonelli, the Italy Stand set-up intends highlighting those design outcomes that take the greatest care to define a future open to respect for the four natural elements.

The aim of the Italy Stand, 4ELEMENTS / TAKING CARE, overseen by Federico Bucci and Luisa Collina, along with Marco Bocciolone and Donatella Sciuto from Politecnico di Milano and Ico Migliore | Migliore+Servetto Architects, is to narrate the vital relationship of Politecnico’s multidisciplinarity, founded on the interconnection between art and science at all dimensional scales, with Water, Air, Fire and Earth. The space is conceived as a contemporary library of scientific knowledge. The visitor moves along a sort of full-height bookcase that, covering walls and ceiling, envelops him. Off-scale books as well as physical and digital panels provide in-depth insights into the University’s projects. Large interactive bright floors burst with life reacting to the visitor’s actions, inviting him to draw close and leaf through the pages to immerse himself in the projects on display.

The picture gallery, made infinite by a play of reflections, builds on the back wall of the Italy Stand a rich wunderkammer (wonder chamber) of Politecnico di Milano. Drawings, archive images, objects and all sorts of memorabilia crowd the space, nearly bursting through its physical boundaries and thereby opening up a kind of time portal to project a historical photograph of this Italian excellence in the world. Each research project, whether underway or finalised by students, researchers and professors of Politecnico di Milano, is grouped in the four sections dedicated to the natural elements: water, air, fire and earth.

The Water section exhibits researches relating to energy and water networks, glaciers, hydrogeological risks, sailing boats and cultivation systems. Air narrates stories of telecommunications, survey, big data, secure circulation of information, light, innovative services, satellites and space research, purity of air and pollution control. Fire tackles the topic of energy, climatic change, recovery of abandoned thermal power stations, fire prevention and seismic risk. Lastly, the portion dedicated to Earth makes room for an exposition on the themes of bioengineering, nanotechnologies, vehicles, care for the built environment, archaeological sites and cultural heritage, natural and agricultural landscapes, and the objects that accompany our daily life.

The presence of Politecnico di Milano restores to the heart of the Italy Stand knowledge, know-how and responsibility, building blocks to construct the future

comments Ferruccio Resta, rector of Politecnico di Milano – Forty-one projects, implemented by students and researchers who currently, with some flashbacks into history, interpret respect for the wonders of nature and the possibility of restoring it. A vision about the major contemporary environmental problems that from Italy extends to the whole world; that combines international openness to the adoption of new technologies; and that lays emphasis on the meaning of beauty”.

The XXII Triennale di Milano, titled Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival, is held from 1 March to 1 September 2019 and is overseen by Paola Antonelli, senior curator from the Department of Architecture and Design of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, founder and director of the Department of Research and Development in the same museum. Broken Nature is a reflection about the relationship between human beings and environment on every scale — from the microbiome to the cosmos —, including the social, cultural and natural ecosystems.
