Gianpiero Mastinu wins TRA VISIONS Competition

Awarding excellence in European research in transport sector

Prof. Gianpiero Mastinu of the Department of Mechanics has won the TRAVISIONS 2024 Senior Researcher competition in the category “Road”. The prize is awarded by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG-RTD).

TRA VISIONS invites young and senior researchers to enter their ideas concerning the future of transport solutions. The Senior Researchers Competition celebrates excellence of leading transport researchers engaged with EU-funded projects. The competition is divided into sectors: road, rail, waterborne, airborne and cross-modal transport.

Prof. Mastinu, with over 30 years of experience, has contributed significantly to automotive engineering projects, particularly in vehicle electrification.

He took part in the EU MSCA-ADEPT project (2013), on vehicle electrification systems. Subsequently, he promoted the ERDF-INPROVES project (2018-2020) which led to the development of electric motors for brakes and high-performance cars, integrating Artificial Intelligence into the design process.

He promoted the ERDF-COEVE project (2023), approved by Lombardy Region, to promote industrial conversion towards electric mobility. In addition, he collaborates within the National Centre of Sustainable Mobility in Spoke 13 (Electrical Traction Systems and Batteries), and is Secretary General of the Lombardy Mobility Cluster.

Currently, speaking of sustainable mobility, Prof. Mastinu is involved in a NextGeneration Europe-funded project focusing on electric quadricycles with advanced and affordable ADAS systems.
