The university pursues its sustainable development objectives through institutional activities, research and teaching. The Energy and Environmental Sustainability project implements policies aimed at rationalising energy usage, reducing CO2 emissions and improving the environmental quality at the university through optimised management and updating of infrastructure and the built heritage, as well as changing lifestyles to encourage good practices. The most urgent challenges are spreading knowledge and awareness in our community, controlling CO2 emissions, energy efficiency and encouraging sustainable mobility and the circular economy. The project extends beyond the confines of the university, involving the public, institutions and companies and forming alliances with national and international organisations.
Città Studi Sustainable Campus
Launched in 2011 by the Politecnico di Milano and the Università degli Studi di Milano, the project was established to help transform the university area into a part of the city that could become a model for quality of life and environmental sustainability by encouraging the entire university population and local residents to become actively involved. The project’s objectives include renovating the campus in a sustainable way, testing innovations developed from university research, launching pilot projects within the university, rethinking lifestyles and creating more welcoming environments, as well as spreading a culture of sustainability through training and information activities open to the whole neighbourhood.
The Energy Commission’s (CE) principal duty is to define the university’s energy strategies, supporting the General Management in meeting its objectives of economic saving, conservation and rational use of energy. The CE is involved in planning and managing energy plants and offers advice on energy services supply contracts. The CE verifies the proper management and maintenance of the plants, liaising with the relevant Administration Areas. It is tasked with monitoring and controlling energy consumption and drinking water for all the university campuses and drawing up energy budgets and forecasts.
