"He was Full Professor of Ecology at the School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering and the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering of the Politecnico di Milano, and a member of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering in the field of Automation Science. His cultural background is in engineering and mathematical modelling, but his research activity has been entirely focused on the ecology and management of renewable resources. More recently, his scientific interests have focused on the ecology of diseases and parasites, the management of marine biological resources, the dynamics of invasive species and the impact of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystems.

He has published more than 200 papers in excellent scientific journals of great international visibility. His editorial work has been intense, as editor of several international journals including Ecology and Society, Advances in Water Resources, and Environment, Ecology & Management. In senior positions, he has contributed to and continues to promote the research activity of various scientific associations and institutions, and in particular the Società Italiana di Ecologia, the Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Scienze del Mare and the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change.

At the Politecnico di Milano he was President of the Board of the Laurea (BSc) Programme in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering, member of the Academic Senate, Deputy Dean of the School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering, member of the scientific and boards of the Piacenza Energy & Environment Laboratory. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including: the Anassilaos prize for environmental sciences in 1997, the Focus prize for studies on energy and the environment in 2002, membership as a full member of the Istituto Lombardo, Accademia di Scienze e Lettere since 2007, membership as a corresponding member of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti since 2008, and the D4D Orange-Sonatel award in the Health category for the modelling of schistosomiasis in Senegal in 2015."
