Politecnico di Milano in Lombardy’s Cosmetics Cluster
The Politecnico di Milano is one of the key players in the Lombardy Technology Cluster for Made in Italy – Cosmetics System, a new ecosystem that brings together universities and companies to strengthen the cosmetics sector’s capacity for innovation.
Officially recognised by the Lombardy Region as the tenth regional technology cluster, the Cluster was established to bring together scientific expertise, infrastructure and industrial capabilities in a sector in which the region is one of Europe’s main hubs, with over 500 companies, 231,000 employees, and a strong focus on research and exports.
The role of the universities – alongside the Politecnico di Milano, the founders include the University of Milan, the University of Milano-Bicocca and the University of Pavia – is central not only to the development of new products, but also to supporting the evolution of production and organisational models across the cosmetics industry.

Innovation in the cosmetics sector necessarily involves production processes. Even the best product, to become a successful innovation, must ensure economic viability and sustainability—factors closely linked to business performance and long-term employment in the sector. For this reason, research and innovation in cosmetics play a fundamental role not only in product development, but also in the evolution of production processes.
