Politecnico di Milano and the European Commission strengthen their research partnership

Politecnico di Milano and Joint Research Centre (JRC), the science and knowledge service of the European Commission, have renewed their scientific collaboration agreement, consolidating a strategic partnership aimed at advancing research, innovation and technology transfer in areas that are critical to European competitiveness and the major transformations shaping contemporary society.

The five-year agreement expands the framework for collaboration already established between the two institutions, strengthening opportunities for joint research and the international exchange of expertise.

The collaboration between Polimi and the JRC covers a wide range of research areas, including artificial intelligence and digital transformation, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, the space economy, smart cities and smart infrastructure, environmental sustainability and the circular economy, social innovation, public policy design, and human-centred design. The agreement also addresses issues relating to infrastructure security and resilience, risk management and territorial development, helping to support evidence-based public policies.

Under the agreement, the Politecnico di Milano and the JRC will be able to develop joint research projects, organise scientific workshops and seminars, promote advanced training activities, and facilitate the exchange and hosting of researchers, experts and PhD students. The collaboration also aims to strengthen the two institutions’ capacity to develop joint initiatives and access European research and innovation funding opportunities.

Particular attention will be paid to the exploitation and uptake of research results and the transfer of knowledge to society, businesses and institutions. The agreement establishes a common framework for the management of intellectual property, the protection of scientific results and the dissemination of knowledge generated through collaborative activities.

With this renewal, Politecnico di Milano reaffirms its commitment to strengthening international collaborations with key players in European research and to contribute, through scientific excellence and innovation, to the development of solutions and policies capable of addressing the challenges posed by the digital, environmental and social transitions.
