“ARCHITECTURE IS NOT ARCHITECTURE”
Interview by: Walter Mariotti, Editorial Director of Domus
Featuring: Emilio Faroldi, Deputy Rector, Politecnico di Milano
“I seek change and new values. I am worried that the younger generations are losing interest in architecture”
Ma Yansong
Architecture today is no longer the architecture we once knew. The architecture of the future will also be fundamentally different from that of the past 100 years.
Ma Yansong, with his attempt to melt the confines between the human-made and the non-anthropic, whishes to promote the emotionally harmonious relationship between people and nature. Architecture should be centred on life, on being a cultural bridge that leads to hope and optimism: today architecture must open itself up, move into new territories, and engage more directly and closely with the times and with people.
It is not a revolution in need, but a re-thinking of architecture as language, a language of mind, body, from a physical language to an emotional one, from a practical to introspective one.
From Ma’s conviction is that architecture should be free of finance, authority and technology and more focused instead on sentiment and human emotions.
From the Harbin Oper House to Absolute Towers, from the YueCheng Courtyard Kindergarten to the Fenix Museum, are rooted in organicity and the need to establish a new relationship with nature, leading to a future where there is balance between society, city and environment.
