A University focused on training
Increasingly more global and competitive, the labour market is undergoing a moment of far-reaching transformation that urges us onto an accurate reflection around our educational offer in the fields of architecture, design and engineering. It is an assessment that personally involves the teaching staff, suggests new laurea programmes, lends value to the teacher-student interaction, and places new approaches and educational models under the magnifying glass.
A shift that, while retaining a strong focus on basic skills, will adopt a determined interdisciplinary and transversal approach aimed at enhancing soft skills and social abilities within study programmes. Issues of concern to socio-economic development — such as food, mobility, health, seismic risk, sound, quality and environmental sustainability, cybersecurity, etc. — will be tackled from an interdisciplinary perspective, based on greater interaction between technology and human sciences.
Whereas before one could simply bend over school desks, today digital technologies enrich the method of providing content and design activities teach students to learn on the field. A new learning methodology that opens the doors to other partner universities. Shared programmes will be jointly developed with them around cutting-edge issues, from cyber security to information technologies for bio-sciences, all the way to a programme that stimulates new paradigms for the medical profession.

- New laurea magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes: Activating new interdisciplinary laurea programmes – Student mobility – Promoting greater outbound mobility during the university programme – Increasing scholarships for student mobility
- Student recruitment: Improving the quality recruitment to step up competitiveness even further
- Student competitions: Promoting international student competitions so that they could become on-field training experiences in a genuine sense

A University engine of research and innovation
Research is our strength, our driving force for the next three years. It will combine, furthering what had already been initiated, cutting-edge technological contents with attention to the social, and will convey our University towards the next decade in the sectors of smart city, health, enabling industries for industry 4.0, cultural heritage and fragility of territories. A flexible and interdisciplinary research, which will rely on high-level facilities, laboratories that will be additionally enhanced and on the development of human capital, with inter-departmental PhD programmes.
A scientific research, that of Politecnico di Milano, capable of successfully intercepting the funds of European programmes, which places us in the forefront in terms of number of Horizon 2020 projects and doubled the ERC-funded projects. Important results that lend even greater urgency to our commitment to share opportunities and support researchers and departments along this path.
In addition, the potential of our start-up, an innovation that often arises directly inside the labs, will not be neglected. We will strive to make funds available to researchers and students for the prototype phase (Proof of Concept), an essential tool to bridge the gap between scientific research and industrial application, in order to verify the innovative potential of the new business ideas and thereby implement solutions focused on a real understanding of the needs for change.

- Interdisciplinary strategic areas: Focusing on key issues: Industry 4.0, Smart Cities, Health, Fragility of territories, Cultural Heritage – Promoting transdisciplinary initiatives
- PhD: Investing in the PhD in order to promote innovation within companies and institutions, financing interdisciplinary scholarships
- Laboratories: Enhancing research facilities through: new Chemical Engineering and Materials Laboratories for the development of biomedical and green chemistry solutions; a new Architectural Modelling Laboratory for an international positioning of Architecture skills – Initiating the reorganisation of experimental labs, towards a Virtual University lab
- Funding of research: Guarding and monitoring the initiatives underway for European tenders and tenders from the Ministry, the Lombardy Region and the reference institutions
- Relationship with companies and start-ups: Consolidating robust and enduring agreements – Stimulating the recognition of new ideas and the "proof of concept" – Establishing a fund aimed at University proposals (Itatech) – Supporting the start-ups and business development
Standing for a protagonist role in the national socio-economic scenario, gateway to the world
An open and international University
The international atmosphere you can perceive in the University spaces is packed with ethical values for our students. Spending the university years in a multicultural environment open to discussion is an opportunity we want to ensure to all those who choose to study at Politecnico di Milano. It is thus essential to continue the process already initiated, reinforcing inbound and outbound mobility and equipping ourselves with an increasingly more cosmopolitan faculty.
To achieve this, it is necessary to stand alongside the main European universities with the strategic alliances of Alliace4Tech and IDEA League, which we will keep on strengthening. We will invest energies in the several international agreements so that they might rise in level and turn into fully-fledged strategic projects, as in the case of the Campus with Tsinghua University and the initiatives in Xi’an (China).
We will expand our horizons towards South America, the United States, Israel, United Kingdom and Africa.
Last, but not least, internationalisation starts from Milan, a city that has proved to be open and inclusive, to be capable of interpreting the needs and habits of contemporaneity. That is why we want our campuses to be attractive, equipped with spaces and services at an international level. That is why we will invest in the new Campus designed by Renzo Piano and in the Vi.Vi.Polimi programme. That is why the industrial projects will increasingly become open and shared construction sites, genuine research and experimentation grounds for the entire country within which the university will be a protagonist.

- International agreements: Reinforcing the training offer of Alliance4Tech and the IDEA League initiatives, in collaboration with the main technical universities in Europe – Intensifying the international networks and the opportunities in China (Innovation Hub a Xi’an) – Implementing initiatives abroad with international universities in South America, United States, Israel, United Kingdom and Africa
- Attractive Milan: Building a Joint Platform with the Chinese Tsinghua University – Creating an innovation district at the Bovisa Campus to combine laboratories, companies and start-ups – Investing in the new Città Studi (Study Campus) Campus designed by Renzo Piano – Setting up new spaces with intelligent technologies, student residences and sports facilities - Setting up open innovation and research laboratories (“the construction sites”) on cutting-edge technological topics: 5G; autonomous mobility; cultural heritage – Contributing to the Human Technopole development and research

A responsible University
There are objectives a university institution can accomplish over a three-year period and others that require a fertile ground to be sown and cultivated, waiting for time to bring the “expected fruits”. They are arrival points that call for a change in mentality, a new approach and an extensive degree of sharing; important goals we can reach in small steps.
We daily strive to ensure that our students and our researchers understand the complex relationships between science, innovation, technology and socio-economic systems, and accordingly improve their capacity to produce a positive impact on the community. We want to be a University able to offer study and growth opportunities to all the deserving subjects, a University focused on diversities as an educational and research strength. We want to ensure that our students do not feel like guests at Politecnico di Milano, but as part of a scientific community that shares accomplishments and successes, a community they can contribute to as advisers, ambassadors and supporters. It is an interaction that remains alive over time.
We believe in fact in the proud spirit of our Alumni, as an integral part of developing the University. Together with Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (Politecnico di Milano Foundation), they represent a resource capable of making the difference over a longer timeframe.
This far-sighted vision includes "Polimi 2040", a round table called upon to sketch the future transformation processes of a technical university, in order to stimulate and share new visions on university education and research.

- Social responsibility: Fuelling initiatives of public commitment and cooperation on development through Polisocial (Academic social responsibility programme) – Backing up the development of scientific research with high social impact through the 5X1000 IRPEF funds [Half a percent Regional Personal Income Tax] (Polisocial Award) – Initiating projects of innovation and synergies with the private sector
- Gender equality: Developing an equal opportunities programme – Increasing the number of women registering for and completing the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) programmes
- Alumni: Contemplating an increasingly more active participation by Alumni within Departments and Schools – Initiating a reflection around the enhancement and transformation of the Alumni association
- Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (Politecnico di Milano Foundation): Strengthening the Foundation as an agile and flexible tool in support of the University
