Sport, wellbeing and participation take centre stage at Olympic Day 2026
Sport, wellbeing and participation were at the heart of Olympic Day 2026 at the Politecnico di Milano. Open to the entire university community, the event encouraged students, faculty and staff to step away from their daily routines, make time for physical activity and embrace a less sedentary lifestyle, even within places of study and work.
Held across the Giuriati Sports Centre and the Bovisa Campus, the Campus Life Area's Sports Service organised 15 free classes, offering opportunities for people of all fitness levels to get active. From Pilates and Yoga to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing, as well as Calisthenics, Basketball and bodyweight training, the programme featured a wide variety of activities. The padel courts available on both the Leonardo and Bovisa campuses also proved extremely popular, with all 12 booking slots filling up quickly.
Olympic Day was above all a collaborative initiative, made possible through the contribution of numerous University departments, divisions and Territorial Campuses, each organising original activities that demonstrated how physical activity can become a powerful driver of community engagement, wellbeing and participation across the University.
Alongside the sports classes, participants enjoyed a wide range of initiatives that explored physical activity from different perspectives. These included a plogging session organised by the General Affairs and Strategic Support Area, Walking Meetings hosted by the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering, yoga sessions offered by the Department of Chemistry, and discussions on the relationship between sport, nutrition and health organised by the Department of Design. The programme also featured table tennis and table football tournaments, aerobics classes, street basketball, volleyball and recreational sports activities organised by the Territorial Campuses of Lecco and Piacenza.
Olympic Day highlighted that sustainability is not only about protecting the environment, but also about promoting people's wellbeing. Creating opportunities for physical activity, encouraging active lifestyles and fostering moments of social connection all contribute to building a healthier, more inclusive and resilient university community.
This message is particularly relevant in a university environment, where busy schedules filled with lectures, studying and work can easily lead to sedentary habits. Even a short active break, a shared walk or an hour of sport can make a meaningful difference.
"We should have an Olympic Day every day" was one of the comments shared at the end of the event. It perfectly captured the spirit of the initiative and the value participants placed on opportunities to enjoy sport, social interaction and shared wellbeing. At the Politecnico di Milano, however, this commitment extends far beyond a single day: throughout the year, courses, events and sporting activities continue to promote an active, inclusive lifestyle and support the wellbeing of the entire university community.
