Active and Sustainable Mobility at Polimi
Active and sustainable mobility was not only one of the key objectives of the 2023–2025 Sustainability Plan, but will remain a strategic commitment for the University over the next three years. Alongside investments in dedicated infrastructure and services, Politecnico di Milano promotes a wide range of initiatives aimed at encouraging its community to adopt more sustainable mobility habits, generating benefits for both the environment and people’s health.
Polimi Ride
The fifth edition of Politecnico di Milano’s cycling event took place on Sunday, June 7, starting and finishing at the new Cremona campus, and attracted more than 900 participants.
“Taking part in PolimiRide is an experience that goes far beyond a sporting event. Cycling together with more than nine hundred students, alumni, staff members, families, and local residents was a meaningful and enjoyable way to rediscover the value of sustainable mobility and, above all, the strong connection between our University and the local area.
The route through the countryside around Cremona, along the banks of the River Po, past farmhouses and landscapes that tell the story of this land, offered an opportunity to experience the territory from a different perspective—one that is more attentive and aware. Bicycles have a unique ability to slow us down, allowing us to notice details and feel part of the environment that surrounds and welcomes us” commented Donatella Sciuto, Rector of Politecnico di Milano.
The two cycling routes, measuring 29 km and 71 km respectively, passed through the Po floodplain, the Po and Morbasco Park, and the Colonie Padane area. The longer route also extended to Stagno Lombardo, Pieve d’Olmi, and San Daniele Po.
“It was particularly meaningful to hold this edition in the wonderful setting of the new Cremona Campus. I would therefore like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the event, especially the Campus Life Area and all the Politecnico staff who, through their professionalism, passion, and commitment, made possible an event capable of engaging an ever-growing community. PolimiRide is the result of a valuable collaboration that brings us together around shared values and opportunities where change takes shape through a sense of belonging” the Rector added.
Bike to Uni
Sustainable mobility initiatives do not end with PolimiRide—they continue throughout the year. From September until October, Politecnico di Milano and Università degli Studi di Bergamo students and staff can take part in the latest edition of the Bike to Uni challenge.
Participants are encouraged to choose sustainable modes of transport—cycling, e-scootering, or walking—not only for their commute to and from the University, but also during their leisure time. In this way, everyday travel becomes a conscious action that benefits both the environment and personal well-being.
Joining is simple: participants only need to download the Wecity app, enter the initiative code, and activate route tracking. As in previous editions, numerous prizes will be awarded based on the various challenge rankings. Full details of the challenge mechanics and privacy policy will soon be available in the participation guidelines on the Sustainable Campus website.
The Bike to Uni challenge was launched as part of the PNRR MOST project – the National Center for Sustainable Mobility. It is promoted by Politecnico di Milano and the University of Bergamo in collaboration with Wecity, an Italian platform dedicated to sustainable mobility.
The first pilot phase took place in autumn 2025. Despite the less-than-ideal season for outdoor activities, participation was significant: 101 active users collectively travelled more than 15,400 km. At Politecnico di Milano alone, 69 participants—mostly staff members—covered over 11,500 km, preventing the emission of 436 kg of CO₂ (calculated using the Polimi methodology).
September Events
To mark the European Mobility Week (September 16–22) and the Engineering Festival (September 18–20), the University will organize a range of initiatives aimed at raising awareness of sustainable mobility, with a particular focus on identifying alternatives to private car use for commuting to Politecnico di Milano.
Stay tuned!
