English language

A prerequisite for enrolling in programmes

Knowledge of the English language is a requirement for enrolling in Laurea (equivalento to Bachelor of Science) and Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes. The required level of English language depends on the year of matriculation and on the chosen programme.

The rules for passing the educational requirements are published in the Guide to the test of English

Engineering programmes and Design Programmes

Your required level of English language skills is established through the online admission test, TOL (Test On Line). The English section of the TOL is required even if you already have an external certificate that proves you have the required level of English.

If some gaps will be detected in your initial preparation you will be assigned the OFAs (additional learning requirements), which are limitations on your college career until you will recover the gap.

  • if you answer correctly at least 24 questions of the relevant section (TENG) will not have OFA in English
  • if you answer less then 24 questions correctly of the relevant section (TENG) you will be given the OFA in English

You will have to recover any OFA (Additional Learning Requirements) of English after the registration:

  • presenting one of the certifications accepted by the University with a comparable level to medium/low level B1 of the CEF (Common European Framework)

or

  • taking once more the English section of the TOL in one of the monthly sessions specially arranged after the registration

Architecture Programmes and single-cycle Master of Science in Building Engineering–Architecture and Urban Planning

Your knowledge of English is not tested during the admission test  since there is a section of English and will be determined at a later stage. For this reason, all students newly registered are assigned OFA in English.

You can prove your knowledge of English is adequate by:

  • supplying one of the certificates accepted by Politecnico di Milano (to be handed in to the Registrars’ Office)
  • participating in specific sessions of TENG (Test of English) organised by Politecnico to check the level of English of prospective students

If you are enrolling in a programme in which classes are held in English, the required level of English is the same as that required to enrol in the Laurea Magistrale (equivalento to Master of Science). Table 1 in the Guide to the test of English contains information on the required levels of English and the certificates accepted by Politecnico.

If you enrolled in the Building Engineering/Architecture 5-year single cycle programme, you will be asked an English level, compulsory for your graduation, equivalent to the one requested for the admission to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes of your enrollment academic year. More information on the English language guide.

Attention: If you are enrolled in a Laurea (equivalento to Bachelor of Science) programme of Politecnico and have requested a change of course, the OFA English detected earlier in your career will be maintained and it will not be possible to add further CFU to your study plan until its fulfillment.

Laurea Magistrale (equivalento to Master of Science) programmes

To prove you have the required knowledge of English you must provide one of the certificates accepted by Politecnico within the matriculation deadline. If you do not provide the certificate, you will not be able to register.

The required level of English (and the related certificate) depends on:

  • the year of matriculation
  • the Laurea Magistrale programme you wish to enrol in

For more information please check the academic regulations of the Schools.

Attention: if you have requested a change of programme, even if belonging to the same School, the level of knowledge of English is that required for the enrollment in the chosen programme, for the specific academic year.
