Inauguration of the new climbing wall on the Lecco campus

An increasingly strong pairing, the one between research and sport at the Politecnico di Milano

The new climbing wall was inaugurated at the Lecco Campus of the Politecnico di Milano, in the presence of Professor Manuela Grecchi, Vice Rector of the Lecco Campus, and Antonio Rossi, Undersecretary with responsibility for Sport, the 2026 Olympics and Major Lombardy Regional Events.

That between research and sport is an increasingly strong pairing at the Lecco campus where, thanks to funding from the Lombardy Region, the E⁴SPORT interdepartmental laboratory has been set up, which encompasses skills capable of working in synergy on four specific topics: athletics, equipment, environment, sports clubs.

It is as part of the activities of E⁴SPORT that, in May 2022, the Human Performance Laboratory - HPL was created, a laboratory that deals with the athlete's functional assessment and performance, biomechanics and injury prevention, sport and disability.

Within a few months of it opening, explained the laboratory’s scientific coordinator Professor Marco Tarabini, during the inauguration, collaborations have been started with various local realities: Sci Club Lecco, AS Padernese, Canottieri Lecco and Ragni di Lecco. With the prestigious Lecco mountaineering group, the researchers of the Human Performance Laboratory are conducting interesting research activities to investigate and characterize the performance of the athlete in sport climbing. Beatrice Colli is among the athletes involved in the activities, world champion in the Junior Speed speciality. By placing photocells on the wall and wearable sensors, it is possible to trace the movement of the athlete and collect data useful for reconstructing the athletic feats and studying solutions to improve performance.

Furthermore, starting next spring, the new wall will host climbing courses for students, organized by the Sport Unit of the Politecnico di Milano.

The climbing wall was able to be installed thanks to the contribution of three sponsors: CAMP S.p.A., DECATHLON Italia S.r.l., MAS Consulting s.r.l..
