Professors Cerullo and Metrangolo members of Academia Europaea

The election highlights the significance and impact of their academic achievements

The new members of the Academia Europaea have been announced. The non-governmental association was established in 1988 with the object of promoting and disseminating excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, the economic, social, and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences for the public benefit and for the advancement of the education.

Among the new members elected in 2026 there are two professors from Politecnico di Milano: Prof. Giulio Cerullo and Prof. Pierangelo Metrangolo.

The new members will be introduced to the academy on 12-16 October during the annual conference in Budapest.

Giulio Cerullo is a Full Professor of Experimental Physics of Matter and Applications in the Department of Physics. His research focuses on the fields of Laser Physics, Nonlinear Optics, and Physics of Matter. His scientific work is evidenced by over 600 publications in international journals and more than 100 invited presentations at international conferences. Prof. Cerullo received in 2011 an Advanced Grant and in 2025 a Synergy Grant from the European Research Council to develop advanced ultrafast spectroscopy techniques. He is a member of the Accademia dei Lincei. At Politecnico, he coordinates the activities of STRATUS -Femtosecond Laser Laboratory and CLARK - Ultrashort IR-VIS Spectroscopy Laboratory.

Pierangelo Metrangolo is a Full Professor of Chemical Foundations of Technologies at Politecnico di Milano, where since 2023 he has served as the Rector’s Delegate for Sports Activities. At the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” his expertise lies in the fields of Crystal Engineering, Supramolecular Chemistry, and Biomimetic Materials, within which he has conducted intensive research with an impact widely recognized at the international level. Professor Metrangolo received grants awarded by the European Research Council for the projects “FOLDHALO – Folding with Halogen Bonding” and “MINIRES – A Minimalist Peptide Elastomer”, aimed at investigating the relevance of biomolecular halogen bonds.
