Description of the initiative

Cultural motivations of the journey
The initiative is part of an agreement signed between the Dastu Department of the Politecnico di Milano and the Comune di Lecce. The aims of this collaboration are to promote cultural and research activities, and projects of mutual interest on the Adriatic coastal area of the Comune di Lecce. In particular, the initiative is integrated with educational activities activated at the Politecnico relating to the laboratory 052689 - BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN STUDIO. The laboratory involves experiences, skills and themes from different disciplines including "Urban and territorial recycling", "Environmental design" and "Recycle and landscape design".

Short description of the destination
The study trip will be an opportunity to explore and learn about a series of abusive coastal urban developments located along the 20 km long Adriatic coast in the Comune di Lecce. These settlements grew between the 1960s and 1980s as satellites of second homes connected to urban centers a few kilometers inland. These reveal today a series of critical issues: the lack of public services, the intrinsic constructive and infrastructural fragility and environmental degradation.

Targets
The general aim is to promote new reflections and innovative strategies able to rethink/reform these abusive coastal settlements in southern Italy. In particular:
- the realization of a meeting between the students of the Politecnico, the councilor of urban planning Rita Miglietta of the Comune di Lecce and the local representatives of some Associations to start an exchange of knowledge and experiences;
- participation in a public debate procedure started by the Administration;
- to understand the contextual conditions, the limits and the problems related to the transformations which took place without authorization and to the decline of this territory and the possibilities for urban development and qualified tourism;
- the potential of a cultural process of exchange between the Public Administrations and the University (in coherence with the attention that the Politecnico is showing towards the Third Mission).
