Description of the initiative

The course is organized as part of the dissemination activities of the Mobilage project, founded by Fondazione Cariplo (Grant 2017-0942) - bando ricerca scientifica 2017 "Ricerca Sociale sull'invecchiamento: persone, luoghi e relazioni" - and coordinated by the DAStU Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), in collaboration with the Faculty of Spatial Sciences of the University of Groningen (UNIGRON), with the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering of the University Federico II of Naples (UNINA), and with the DEIB Department of the Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI). The aim of the course is to provide students with the theoretical background and operational skills to manage individual mobility data - collected directly by the students using MapTraces app, developed by DEIB -, analyse, and map them in a GIS environment. For this reason, the course is divided into three different phases. In the first concerns: (i) an introduction to the course; (ii) an illustration of the MapTraces for Andriod, which will be used by the students to record their individual movements the week after the start of the course; (iii) an introductory lecture to the GIS tools, used to manage and process the recorded data; (iv) a lecture on mobility and accessibility measures is also scheduled. The second phase, lasting seven days, consists of tracking the students' mobility, which has been recorded by the app they have installed in their personal smart phone. At the end of the second phase, the individual mobility tracks will be acquired in order to make them available for the laboratory, foreseen in the third phase.
Finally, the third phase involves the presentation of some research experiences based on the analysis of individual mobility data, and the students' exercise aimed at mapping the mobility traces, and their treatment with GIS tools also including the integration of additional spatial data sources. Students will work in groups of 2-3 people. The Scientific Committee of the course is composed by: Ilaria Mariotti, Fabio Manfredini, Fulvia Pinto, Sara Comai (POLIMI); Gerardo Carpentieri e Floriana Zucaro (UNINA); Aleid Brouwer e Gerd Weitkamp (UNIGRON).
