Description of the initiative
The context of the course concerns Industry 4.0 with the aim of introducing two elements at the base of the control of industrial processes: the sensor and the controller. After an overview of the most common sensors for industrial applications, the first part of the course will focus on position and pressure transducers. These two transducers will be presented from the technology (primary element, production technology, ...), application (environmental conditions of use, product validation tests, ...), and metrology (datasheet) point of view, with references to industry regulations. Through practical experiences, students will learn to evaluate the functioning of the sensors, to configure them and to validate the measurements for a given application (e.g. metrology test, linearity, repeatability, etc.).The second part of the course has the purpose of introducing a multi-function regulator/controller therefore closing the control loop with all the functions that are normally requested in practical applications (alarms, machining programs, logic functions, user interface).The activities and contents presented are a useful experience for students who want to have an idea of what are the parameters that guide the designer in choosing a specific sensor / controller according to the application. Furthermore, the student will become familiar with the fundamental elements that compose a simple process control loop.
