Description of the initiative

The initiative is part of the DesAI project, a research project funded by the Design Department of the Politecnico di Milano. Its goal is to study the changes that technology is bringing to the Design Thinking (DT) process. DesAI wants to understand the role of Big Data in a process typically based on few meaningful and strongly contextual data (which we called Thick Data). The DesAI research is composed of three macro-phases: literature review, case study collection, and experimentation. The first two phases aimed at mapping the current process of Design Thinking based on Thick data, building a theoretical framework. From the case studies, a mapping of how real Design processes have been influenced by the presence of Big data was obtained. The third phase, of experimentation, aims at the direct and controlled observation of these processes. To do this, we are looking for designers interested in participating. The specific activity that we intend to carry out with students therefore concerns the third phase of the project, and offers young designers the possibility of directly experimenting with the use of Big Data within a design brief assigned by a real client, the company JMC Group. The objective of the activity will be to make participants use a mix of Big and Thick data in a guided design process that will end with the presentation of service concepts, interaction and strategies for the company identified in the brief. Participants will be provided with all the data and software to be used during the activity, and direct support from JMC Group. They will have to work in small groups of 2-3 people to develop the requirements of the brief. Moreover, at the end of the workshop, the company will select the concept that best responds to the brief by offering a prize. Each member of the winning group will receive a Workstation Mobile DELL Precision (commerecial value of about €3000) and the possibility of an internship with JMC Group.
