Description of the initiative

The African Fabbers School workshop intends to design and build an aggregation space for young people in the city of Daga Dialaw in Senegal. This space will be conceived as a sort of open-air pavillion to protect from the sun and rain, generating an urban micro-infrastructure that is both playful and interconnected. The project takes into account the needs of the community and experimenting with ecological building techniques with local materials. The workshop is part of the Ëlëku Daga - the future of Daga, an inclusive and sustainable city, propoted by Ingegneria Senza Frontiere - Milano (Engineering Without Borders) and co-funding of the Lecchese Committee for Peace and Cooperation among People. Through this project ISF -MI aims to support the capacity of the local people to achieve management in a participated way at the birth of the new urban center of Daga-Kholpa, promoting an inclusive and sustainable developement and protecting natural resources and the existing cultural heritage. The intervention is based on two axes: the life of the past is the shared management of the new urban center of Daga-Kholpa and the setting up of an aggregation space for young people on the Milan Polytechnic and self-construction.

Educational goals:
  • Introduce the principles of ecological design in relation to vernacular architecture in Africa
  • Introducing collaborative design and prototyping methodologies
  • Introduction to self-construction techniques with wood, earth, recycled materials etc.
The methodology is based on a "learning by doing" approach, which is why it alternates frontal lessons with group workshop moments.
