Description of the initiative
The arts as nourishment for the project of architecture and design: dialogue, symbiosis, fusion, mutual transfiguration. Revisiting these multiple ways of cultivating inter-artistic research, this course is intended to provide students with a new key to interpreting the work of the architect and designer.
In many of Bottoni's works - the author of 485 works, with projects and realisations ranging from design to furniture, architecture, urban and landscape design and urban planning - one can perceive the tension towards a total art and the search for beauty in the rediscovery of a civil measure, together with an inalienable space for freedom. Bottoni looks for the invention that moves us to amazement, the coup de théâtre that marks a breakthrough, the expressive force that knows how to draw on and combine several registers - from the lyrical to the epic and divertissement - where the "roundabout of the muses" (Jurij M. Lotman) is called upon to underline the joy of living together.
The lectures will be held by Giancarlo Consonni and Graziella Tonon (Scientific Board of the Archivio) and will take place at the Archivio Piero Bottoni where students will see archival drawings.

Course structure
- The arts as nourishment for the architecture and design project. Piero Bottoni's complex education (Brera and Politecnico) and the vast horizon of his interests (painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, cinema, set design, fashion, arts and crafts, as well as urban planning, architecture and design). The traces of all this in his works as an architect.
- Sculpture and architecture. The interaction of bodies and the aesthetics of the whole.
- The fusion of architecture and sculpture and/or their mutual nourishment. The sculptural object. The architecture-sculpture. Nature and the products of technology as a source of inspiration.
- The constructive value of colour. Chromatisms and other research on colour in architecture.
- Excursus: matter and colour in the chromatic symphonies of Italian cities.
- Architecture and the decorative arts. Graphics in relation to architecture and design.
- Photomontage as a design tool. Photomontage as a communication tool. Cinema as a tool for educating people to live in new environments.
- Total art. Works on the borderline between architecture, sculpture, scenography and installation.
