Description of the initiative

The primary task of engineering is to identify and implement solutions to meet societal demands and needs. In natural risks management, the technical and social dimensions of the problem are particularly evident because of the prevailing collective scale of risk preparedness mitigation actions. In the course, real cases of flood risk management will allow students to acquire innovative modelling approaches and tools for assessing the impacts of a flood on the exposed elements, and then to evaluate possible technical solutions in relation not only to their effectiveness, but also to the social consequences of their implementation. Students will deal with the proposed case studies with a problem-solving approach, under the supervision of experts from the various technical and social disciplines involved, but also from various institutional stakeholders. Indeed, the course involves, as lecturers, experts in hydraulic engineering (Francesco Ballio e Alice Gallazzi from DICA), experts in the GIS environment (Simome Sterlacchni e Marco Zazzeri from CNR-IGAG), experts in philosophy and sociology (Daniele Chiffi from DaStu and Luca Zanetti from DICA, as representatives of META), experts in decision processes (Simona Muratori from Poliedra) well as representatives of the Po River District Authority and the Interregional Agency for the Po River. In this context, students will also acquire soft-skills related to "social-education" aspects. The course will be mainly delivered by flipped-classrooms. Two or three-hours classes are planned, each one related to a specific aspect of the problem at stake, and ideally organized as follows: introduction to the problem, teamwork, restitution and discussion. Course contents are in line with Sustainable Development Goals "Sustainable cities and communities", "Climate Action" and "Peace, justice and strong institutions".
